NAFAS Demonstrators

NAFAS DEMONSTRATORS are qualified at Area and National level. Qualification Tests for Area Demonstrators are held regularly within each Area. Demonstrations play an important part in flower club programmes with each demonstrator creating a variety of individually tailored floral exhibits, from classical to contemporary, often influenced by nature or a trendy new idea. Audiences can enjoy a ‘live show’ combining art, horticulture and theatre.

Jean Fordham

NAFAS Area Demonstrator

I live at Newthorpe which is close to Junction 26 on the M1, so an easy starting point for travelling.

My interests are varied, I’m lucky to have five grandchildren who keep us happy and busy, they have a dog each, and we have our Great Dane Bonnie (who loves to squeeze in the car when we are demonstrating), so as you can imagine it can be quite hectic!!! I enjoy walking our local forest trails, shopping and browsing for bargains and attending as many different types of courses as possible, it doesn’t matter what!!

I became a demonstrator in 2012 and still absolutely love it; we’ve met lots of lovely people and visited towns we had never heard of.

Rachel is a member of both the North East and North Midlands Areas of NAFAS, is a qualified Area Demonstrators and a professional qualified (B.Ed Hons) lecturer/teacher.

Her passion is willow and she teaches workshops all around the country for a variety of organisations incorporating willow with both traditional and contemporary styles of floral design. She works for/with some of the countries most respected floral design teachers/demonstrators and teaches for England’s leading willow growers.

Her work is predominantly large scale and inspired by organic natural forms. She specialises in tailored workshops for individual clubs which are fun, stimulating and which inspire creativity in those she works with. Her demonstrations again show her ‘obsession’ with willow, and are themed to suit seasonal variations-where possible she uses traditional English flowers and foliage locally sourced.

Her work has been published in The Flower Arranger and other books/magazines.

Andrew Key

NAFAS Area Demonstrator

Andrew was introduced to the wonderful world of floral art having just gone along to his wife’s club to ‘make up the numbers!’  However, he was soon bitten by the flower arranging bug and has over recent years enjoyed learning more about it at every opportunity, including training as a demonstrator and speaker.  He is currently the North Midlands Area Chairman.

Andrew has many a tale to tell, whilst producing some memorable floral designs.  He is always keen to ensure that as far as possible, raffle winners take home a completed design, with many containers and extras included in the prize.

Paula Routledge

NAFAS Area Demonstrator

Working in the horticultural sector for 30 years, along with my husband Steven, we run a countryside venue ‘Floral Media’ on the edge of the rural village of Caunton, Nottinghamshire.

We open our gardens for group visits, the National Garden Scheme and The British Red Cross.

I have been a hortic florist for over 15 years now mostly specialising in weddings and events.

Paula can also be heard as a gardening broadcaster on BBC Radio Nottingham.

As a member of Flowers from the Farm I am passionate about growing my own flowers and foliage for use in floral design.

Competitions are addictive and 2019 saw the arrival of a Chelsea Flower Show Silver-Gilt Medal.

Many of my demonstrations are based around my adventures as a charity fundraiser.  I was very proud to receive The British Empire Medal 2021 for charitable services to Nottingham.

Linda Smith

NAFAS Area Demonstrator

Originally from Kettering in Northamptonshire, I have lived in Nottinghamshire for many years; I qualified as an Area Demonstrator in 2012.

My demonstration titles are inspired mainly by travel and seasonal materials from the natural world. I also find the European style of flower arranging inspirational. Researching topics for my demonstrations and selecting plant material that closely interpret my titles are something that I really enjoy.

I am a long standing member of Breaston Flower Circle and have served as a committee member (including Chairman) for many years; I am also a member of Future Concepts.

Apart from floral design, my other interests are travel (particularly to Arctic countries and Italy!) and botanical illustration.
