NAFAS JUDGES

NAFAS JUDGES are qualified at Area and National level. Qualification Tests for Area Judges are held regularly within each Area. NAFAS Judges undergo rigorous training in order to qualify and make unbiased decisions before allocating awards. They are available to judge at Flower Club Competitions and Flower Arranging Shows, whatever the size or location, and are happy to give constructive comments on matters relating to competitive work.

Sharon entered the Flower Arranging world after completing the ‘NAFAS Diploma’ & a Contemporary Floral Design Course. She also qualified as an Area Demonstrator and a City & Guilds tutor in 2004.

Sharon has represented the SMA of NAFAS with a club exhibit at ‘Rejoice’—Flower Festival at Westminster Abbey 2009. She has demonstrated in Spain! Sharon is a keen competitor, gaining a third prize at the Nationals. Sharon teaches Leisure classes in Leicester, also private workshops and is a Member of Floral Education Association in the South Midlands Area and a Member of Flower Club of Market Harborough since 1982.

Sharon is very enthusiastic about her hobby and work; her demonstrations are inspiring and different!! All demonstrations have a variety of designs in Traditional, Modern and Contemporary styles, something for everyone!

June Borrowdale lives at Carlton-in-Lindrick near Worksop and is an Area Demonstrator and Area Judge, having qualified in the North East Area. She is a member of Future Concepts and Dinnington Floral Society and, having recently completed her term as Area Judging Representative for the North East Area is currently Area Demonstrators`s Representative for the North Midlands Area.

June is a National Cert.Ed. Teacher and lectured at both Doncaster and North Nottinghamshire College and now runs popular independent classes and day schools covering a range of floral art and floristry topics and enjoys tutoring workshops and day schools for flower clubs or independent group bookings. She is a member of the National Education Committee of NAFAS

June’s demonstrations feature her passion for garden plant material and take inspiration from the colours and natural beauty of her local area. In 2012 June was thrilled to be included in the team from the North East Area who staged the exhibit on behalf of NAFAS at Chelsea.

Lynn passed the Area Judges test in July 2012, after being a keen and quite often successful competitor for some time.

Lynn has been a member of Scunthorpe Flower Club for ten years and Treasurer for three years, and also belongs to Grimsby Flower Lovers’ Club and Future Concepts.

Lynn is more than willing to give advice on all aspects of competitive work.

Pauline Foster lives in central Lincolnshire and travels extensively demonstrating to clubs, teaching classes and workshops and judging competitions. As a qualified teacher, with an extensive background as a College Lecturer, Pauline offers independent classes and day schools covering a wide range of topics. She is a member of the North Midlands Area Teachers' Association and a NAFAS National Teacher.

Pauline is also an experienced and popular demonstrator who uses her love of art and design as inspiration for her work. Embroidery and textiles are particular interests which are often used to enhance her designs. Pauline is currently the Demonstrators' Representative for the North Midlands Area of NAFAS and has combined her love of demonstrating and education to organise training and tests for new Area Demonstrators.

As well as being a NAFAS Area Judge she is also a keen competitor, achieving frequent successes including first prize at the NAFAS National Show in Coventry and Best in Show on two occasions at the Harrogate Autumn Shows. She is always keen to be involved in flower festivals in cathedrals, churches and stately homes and undertakes work for celebrations and weddings.

Since moving from London to Lincolnshire in year 2000, Moira has channelled her energies and love of flowers to extend her knowledge base and promote NAFAS, its educational aims and the benefits to us all. Moira is currently the Chairman of the North Midlands Area of NAFAS and qualified as a NAFAS Area Judge in July 2012.

A member of Grimsby Flower Lovers’ Club (having held past officer roles and Chairmanship) and a member of Caistor Flower Club, Moira is an enthusiastic member and competitor.

Living near to Market Rasen in the idyllic Wolds Area of Lincolnshire, Moira is eager to use her newly qualified skills as a Judge.

Jane Walden is a NAFAS Area Judge and Teacher. Jane lives in Keyworth near Nottingham & has been a member of Nottingham Flower Club since 1980 and the North Midlands Teachers Association.

She started competing at 7 years of age whilst living in Peterborough. Her passion for this hobby became more formal with qualifications starting in 1999. Jane has since managed a Florist’s shop, created bespoke wedding flowers for many years & started teaching leisure classes in 2005. She is also a member of the Teacher’s Association. Jane is available for day schools or evening workshops. Her particular interests include the manipulation of plant materials & various craft based skills, plus of course keeping up to date with current trends. Jane also loves gardening & using all types of materials, possibly in a different way! In more recent years Jane has returned to competitive work. Hence the interest in becoming an Area judge in 2012. She has represented Nottingham Flower Club at Chelsea & the North Midlands Area at Harrogate Show. As time allows, Jane would like to get even more involved with competitive work.

Marilyn Williams qualified as a NAFAS Area Teacher and Area Judge after completing the NAFAS diploma in Floral Art and Design in 2000, City & Guilds Contemporary Floral design course in 2001 and Teacher training in 2003. Marilyn lives in South Lincolnshire and is a member of Stamford Floral Art Society and Future Concepts CFDG. She is the current Education representative for the North Midlands Area of NAFAS and Chair of the Teachers`s Association.

A very keen gardener Marilyn is inspired by nature, but enthusiastically follows current trends in floral art. She is prepared to travel and is available to judge or to teach at day schools and workshops for all levels of ability.

Joan is a member of the National Education Committee and currently the Course Consultant for the OCN certificated courses offered by NAFAS. Also an enthusiastic member of North Midlands Teachers’ Association, Grimsby Flower Lovers’ Club, and New Dimensions Contemporary flower group.

A keen competitor, Joan has participated at the Nationals in the Area class, gaining a third prize. Also medals at Chelsea and many prizes at Harrogate Spring Flower show, including the Grenfell medal twice for most points. Qualified in flower arranging and as a teacher (Cert. Ed.) in 1996 and in Floristry through Bishop Burton College, Beverley, Joan has taught Flower Arranging, NCFE courses, Diploma of Floristry and leisure classes, gaining a wide range of experience. She is now an Independent tutor for NAFAS, offering courses from Level 1 through to Level 4. Joan recently enjoyed tutoring the Teaching Training Certificate successfully for NM area. These courses are very flexible and can be delivered to suit personal requirements. Private workshops are also available on request

NAFAS DEMONSTRATORS are qualified at Area and National level. Qualification Tests for Area Demonstrators are held regularly within each Area. Demonstrations play an important part in flower club programmes with each demonstrator creating a variety of individually tailored floral exhibits, from classical to contemporary, often influenced by nature or a trendy new idea. Liz is of Malaysian heritage and her vibrant personality reflects in her love of animals and flowers.

Glenda Bream has had a long career in retail floristry and is now a freelance floral designer specialising in flowers for weddings and functions. Glenda qualified as a NAFAS North Midlands Area Demonstrator in 2012. She is based in Sheffield and is a member of Sheffield Floral Club and Dronfield Floral Art Club.

Glenda’s passion for both traditional and contemporary floral design and her extensive knowledge of plant material all add to her skills as a demonstrator. Glenda loves gardening and garden design and grows much of the foliage used in her demonstrations.

Judi Cripps is an Area Demonstrator and National Teacher living in Burton on Trent. She has taught City and Guilds Parts 1 & 2 and Contemporary Floral Design at Broomfield College Derbyshire. At present she is teaching the NAFAS Certificated Course in Burton on Trent.

Working with natural plant materials in all its many forms, Judi also enjoys exhibiting at Chelsea, NAFAS National and local shows both individually, in a group and with students.

A member of Future Concepts Contemporary Floral Design Group, North Midlands Teachers Association, Burton Flower Club and is the current President of the North Midlands Area of NAFAS.

I live at Newthorpe on the Nottingham/Derby border close to junction 26 of the M1.

I have been a freelance florist for the last five years enjoying all aspects of shop and wedding work. I am a member of the Heanor Floral Art Group and the Hucknall Flower Arranging Group.

I am excited to have become one of the recent area demonstrators for the North Midlands Area of NAFAS and can’t wait to get started. I enjoy both modern and traditional designs and like to use foliage from my own and friends gardens alongside the wide variety available commercially. My memories of living on a farm in a small village, an interest in antiques/collectables, a passion for jewellery along with my love of the countryside provide ideas for my arrangements.

Caroline began Flower arranging at adult education classes in 1995 before going on to study to City & Guild Level 3. She also began working at a Florist shop in Brigg North Lincolnshire. She progressed to teaching flower arranging, became self-employed and recently studied for a Fine Art Degree, graduating as an Artist in 2013. Caroline has been a member and on the committee of Caistor Flower Club since 1997, twice taking the role of programme secretary and Chairman of a small enthusiastic Club who continue to hold an Annual show in July. She qualified as a NAFAS Area Demonstrator in 2004 and has demonstrated throughout the Area. She joined the North Midlands Area committee in 2013 and is currently the Area Media Officer and also National Press Officer for NAFAS.

Caroline is very enthusiastic about her work and annually co-ordinates a Flowers in the Gallery event at 20-21 Visual Arts centre Scunthorpe which combines both of her interests and encourages people to take an interest in the Art of Flower arranging. Her demonstrations consist of Traditional and Contemporary designs to entertain and inspire her audience to be creative with flowers.

Gill Mills became a NAFAS Area Demonstrator in 2009. Gill lives in central Nottinghamshire and is currently Secretary/Media Officer for Stapleford Flower Club and an active member of Breaston Flower Circle. She also belongs to the contemporary design group Future Concepts and the Area Teachers Association.

Since retiring from teaching in 2006, Gill has completed a Contemporary Design Course, C & G Level 1 and 2 in Flower Arranging and also Floral Styling. Her recent experiences of competing - the first for many years - proved to be very successful.

A flower arranger since her teens, Gill takes part in local flower festivals and joined teams representing Breaston Flower Circle at Nottingham’s St. Barnabas Cathedral, Chatsworth and Southwell Minster Flower Festivals. Gill became an independent teacher through the NAFAS Leisure Initiative in 2011 leading courses and one day workshops locally.

Since early childhood a fascination with flowers and nature have inspired Jonathan to become one of the UK's leading designers within the floral art world. For over 20 years he has inspired and entertained audiences and individuals with his love of flowers through demonstrations, workshops and classes. Jonathan is widely known through his role as the Floral Expert on BBC's Big Allotment Challenge and he is the founder of #flowertalk which he hosts weekly on Twitter.

Living on the edge of the Peak District Jonathan undertakes extensive private commissions throughout the UK for both public and private clients. The annual floral extravaganza "Florabundance" at the world renowned Chatsworth House is designed by Jonathan where he presents exclusive demonstrations and workshops in Chatsworth's amazing Victorian Theatre throughout the year. He runs his own acclaimed and highly popular Flower School attracting students both locally and internationally to learn new trends and techniques within the floral world.

Working directly with the retail floristry sector Jonathan`s extensive industry knowledge, skills and presentation techniques are highly sought after by wholesalers and independent retailers to help source and promote seasonal products through demonstrations, interior displays, workshops and magazine articles. Rachel is a member of both the North East and North Midlands Areas of NAFAS, is a qualified Area Demonstrators and a professional qualified (B.Ed Hons) lecturer/teacher.

Her passion is willow and she teaches workshops all around the country for a variety of organisations incorporating willow with both traditional and contemporary styles of floral design. She works for/with some of the countries most respected floral design teachers/demonstrators and teaches for England's leading willow growers.

Her work is predominantly large scale and inspired by organic natural forms. She specialises in tailored workshops for individual clubs which are fun, stimulating and which inspire creativity in those she works with. Her demonstrations again show her 'obsession' with willow, and are themed to suit seasonal variations-where possible she uses traditional English flowers and foliage locally sourced.

Her work has been published in The Flower Arranger and other books/magazines.

Di Smith lives in Lincolnshire and has been a NAFAS Area Demonstrator since 2004. She is also an Area Teacher and a Member of the North Midlands Area Teacher’s Association. Linda originally comes from Northamptonshire but has lived in Toton, Nottinghamshire for many years. She passed her Area Demonstrator's Test in 2012 and also holds City & Guilds Floristry Parts 1 and 2 together with Contemporary Floristry Design. Her inspiration comes from places she has visited at home and abroad as well as the natural world.

Linda is a long standing member of Breaston Flower Circle and has served on the Committee for many years holding the office of Chairman twice. She has also undertaken many arrangements at local flower festivals

Apart from being a keen flower arranger, Linda is a keen artist and particularly enjoys flower painting and botanical illustration.

Through the Garden Arch, Winter Warmer, My World of Flowers

Susan qualified as a NAFAS Area Demonstrator, passing her test at Oxton in the North Midlands area in 2009. In June the same year she qualified as a florist with a National Certificate (Level 2) in floristry, gained at Moreton Morell college in Warwickshire.

Susan grew up in rural Oxfordshire and has always been a lover of flowers and nature but only took to flower arranging rather late in life, inspired by her late father-in-law, a trained nurseryman and keen amateur gardener. She also has two allotments of her own.

She leads a very busy life with flowers and plants occupying almost every waking (and sleeping!) moment including helping with the village church flowers, wedding work and the allotments producing a wealth of garden plant material for her arrangements as well as a year-round supply of fresh fruit and veg. Susan is a member of Banbury Floral Art Group and Bloxham Flower Club and enjoys competing at local and area level, just for fun, using her own flowers and plant material whenever possible. She won the Novice Class at the Royal Show in 2008.

Susan takes great pride in the quality of her plant material and her demonstrations are geared to show how the designs can be recreated by the keen flower arranger at home. Joan Woodhead is a NAFAS Area Demonstrator, National Teacher and Area Judge. Joan lives in North Lincolnshire and is a member of Grimsby Flower Club and the North Midlands Teachers Association.

A keen competitor, Joan has participated at the Nationals in the Area class, gaining a third prize. Also medals at Chelsea and many prizes at Harrogate Spring Flower show, including the Grenfell medal twice for most points. Qualified in flower arranging and as a teacher (Cert. Ed.) in 1996 and in Floristry through Bishop Burton College, Beverley, Joan has taught Flower Arranging, NCFE courses, Diploma of Floristry and leisure classes, gaining a wide range of experience. She is now an Independent tutor for NAFAS, offering courses from Level 1 through to Level 4. Joan recently enjoyed tutoring the Teaching Training Certificate successfully for NM area. These courses are very flexible and can be delivered to suit personal requirements. Private workshops are also available on request.

‘The Life & Times of an Elizabethan Lady'

Ann Horsley qualified in the North Midlands Area as a NAFAS Area Speaker in 2008 and as a National Speaker in March 2012. She lives in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. Ann is a past Chairman and President of her local flower club and a member of two others. At the Area AGM in November 2012 Ann was made an Associate of Honour for her services to NAFAS since its inception.

Her talk is fully costumed and she comes dressed as a wealthy 16th Century Court Lady. There are many interesting visual aids, all of which she has made herself. Colour is a great influence both in costume design as well as in flower arranging.

During “The Only Business I Know” Margaret shares her passion for music and her vast experiences in musical theatre, the operatic societies and solo performing. Sharon entered the Flower Arranging world after completing the ‘NAFAS Diploma’ & a Contemporary Floral Design Course. She also qualified as an Area Demonstrator and a City & Guilds tutor in 2004.

Sharon has represented the SMA of NAFAS with a club exhibit at ‘Rejoice’—Flower Festival at Westminster Abbey 2009. She has demonstrated in Spain! Sharon is a keen competitor, gaining a third prize at the Nationals. Sharon teaches Leisure classes in Leicester, also private workshops and is a Member of Floral Education Association in the South Midlands Area and a Member of Flower Club of Market Harborough since 1982.

Sharon is very enthusiastic about her hobby and work; her demonstrations are inspiring and different!! All demonstrations have a variety of designs in Traditional, Modern and Contemporary styles, something for everyone!

Jill Bewick is a NAFAS National Teacher, and lives in central Nottinghamshire. She has been teaching flower arranging for 25 years, including the NAFAS Course, Area Workshops, and Personal and Community Development Courses for many colleges in Nottinghamshire. Jill loves all aspects of floral design - traditional, contemporary, and environmental art, alongside a love of plants, gardens and the countryside.

Jill is Chairman of Ravenshead Flower Arranging Group, a Past Chairman of Future Concepts CFD Group, and past Secretary of the Teachers' Association. Jill served as North Midlands Area Chairman, and is an Area Past President, and is now enjoying more time for teaching weekly contemporary floral design classes for Sutton Academy Transformation Trust, and workshops in many NAFAS Areas. Jill is available daytime, evenings and weekends, and is happy to discuss tutoring any topics your Club Members may enjoy.

June Borrowdale lives at Carlton-in-Lindrick near Worksop and is an Area Demonstrator and Area Judge, having qualified in the North East Area. She is a member of Future Concepts and Doncaster Flower Club and is currently Area Judging Representative for the North East Area.

June is a National Cert.Ed. Teacher and lectured at both Doncaster and North Nottinghamshire College and now runs popular independent classes and day schools covering a range of floral art and floristry topics and enjoys tutoring workshops for flower clubs. She is a member of the National Education Committee of NAFAS.

June’s demonstrations feature her passion for garden plant material and take inspiration from the colours and natural beauty of her local area. In 2012 June was thrilled to be included in the team from the North East Area who staged the exhibit on behalf of NAFAS at Chelsea.

Judi Cripps is an Area Demonstrator and National Teacher living in Burton on Trent. She has taught City and Guilds Parts 1 & 2 and Contemporary Floral Design at Broomfield College Derbyshire. At present she is teaching the NAFAS Certificated Course in Burton on Trent.

Working with natural plant materials in all its many forms, Judi also enjoys exhibiting at Chelsea, NAFAS National and local shows both individually, in a group and with students.

A member of Future Concepts Contemporary Floral Design Group, North Midlands Teachers Association, Burton Flower Club and at present is Chairman of the North Midlands Area of NAFAS.

Pauline Foster lives in central Lincolnshire and travels extensively demonstrating to clubs, teaching classes and workshops and judging competitions. As a qualified teacher, with an extensive background as a College Lecturer, Pauline offers independent classes and day schools covering a wide range of topics. She is a member of the North Midlands Area Teachers' Association and a NAFAS National Teacher.

Pauline is also an experienced and popular demonstrator who uses her love of art and design as inspiration for her work. Embroidery and textiles are particular interests which are often used to enhance her designs. Pauline is currently the Demonstrators' Representative for the North Midlands Area of NAFAS and has combined her love of demonstrating and education to organise training and tests for new Area Demonstrators.

As well as being a NAFAS Area Judge she is also a keen competitor, achieving frequent successes including first prize at the NAFAS National Show in Coventry and Best in Show on two occasions at the Harrogate Autumn Shows. She is always keen to be involved in flower festivals in cathedrals, churches and stately homes and undertakes work for celebrations and weddings.

Jane Walden is a NAFAS Area Judge and Teacher. Jane lives in Keyworth near Nottingham & has been a member of Nottingham Flower Club since 1980 and the North Midlands Teachers Association.

She started competing at 7 years of age whilst living in Peterborough. Her passion for this hobby became more formal with qualifications starting in 1999. Jane has since managed a Florist’s shop, created bespoke wedding flowers for many years & started teaching leisure classes in 2005. She is also a member of the Teacher’s Association. Jane is available for day schools or evening workshops. Her particular interests include the manipulation of plant materials & various craft based skills, plus of course keeping up to date with current trends. Jane also loves gardening & using all types of materials, possibly in a different way! In more recent years Jane has returned to competitive work. Hence the interest in becoming an Area judge in 2012. She has represented Nottingham Flower Club at Chelsea & the North Midlands Area at Harrogate Show. As time allows, Jane would like to get even more involved with competitive work.

Kathryn is a NAFAS National Teacher and lives near Lincoln. She is a member of the North Midlands Teachers Association, Chairman of Future Concepts CFDG, and a member of her local Flower Club in North Hykeham.
